Thaddeus scheduled a press conference to deliver the DA’s official opening remarks to the press, reporters, and TV. Much of what he would say might very well become the poster child of unethical commentary on a pending case. Still, the entire prosecution team, minus Mac, agreed in private to take part, regardless. They did this because the case was extremely complex—until they talked about it, and it then became simple.

Mac was still AWOL, and it was a concern for Thaddeus, a big problem, but he needed to forge ahead. He couldn’t cancel the press meeting for lack of a prosecutor. They would move forward as if Mac weren’t a part of the team. Thaddeus would take up the slack; he’d done it a thousand times before.

The prosecution team and the press gathered that day in the DA’s press office in Justice Hall. Thaddeus’s prosecution team sat at a table at the front of the room, a microphone on a short silver stand in front of each person. Thaddeus stood behind the podium to which was attached a snake nest of microphones and segmented microphone necks. He looked around the room and smiled.

“Thank you for coming today,” Thaddeus said to the crowd of thirty or more. “We wanted to call this meeting and attempt to answer some of the hundreds of questions from the press and public that our office is receiving every week about the RICO case and the defendants who are being prosecuted. There are lots of questions pending, and today we’ve assembled the folks who most likely will be able to answer those questions. For the record, let me introduce each member of the four-member prosecution team and indicate their role.

“The first person I would like to introduce is Robert Bullock, who is prosecuting homicide cases stemming from human trafficking. He is splitting the human trafficking duties with our other deputy district attorney Michele Lark. You will hear from Michele next. For now, let me ask Deputy District Attorney Bullock to say a few words.”

Robert Bullock pushed his wireframe glasses upon his head and jammed his hands into his leather elbow sports coat. Having achieved the level of comfort which he always seemed to shoot for, he launched right in. “As Mr. Murfee said, my name is Robert Bullock, and I am a deputy DA with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. I have been here for ten years, and I like my job very much. I consider myself a lifetime devotee to the prosecution of serious criminal cases. I am co-prosecuting with Michele Lark. We have split the duties so that I have the homicides, and she has the human trafficking out of the human trafficking cases in general. In our case, there is going to be evidence that the authorities stopped a cube truck that crossed the border into Southern California, and the occupants in the driver’s compartment jumped out and scattered and ran like rabbits. That part of it is Michele Lark’s case. After
